It was late, and Candy had the observation deck all to herself. She watched the reflection of the man walking up behind her in the window. He ran his hands down the sides of her arms ever so gently until his fingers entwined with hers. She leaned back into him and let his strong arms envelop her. “I don’t ever want to feel the way I did yesterday ever again,” he said.
“I’m a tough girl, Jack. They made me out of titanium.”
“I know, and there is a part of me that says I shouldn’t feel the way I do. But, when I’m around you I feel alive in a way I’ve never felt before. You look at me, and my heart skips a beat.”
“Just one beat, Jack; I must be losing my touch.”
“Stop kidding, Candy. If you would have died, I would have died too,” Jack said.
Candy turned around and wrapped her arms around Jack and pulled him close. “I am a personal companion, Jack, and I was one for 23 years, but I have died and been reborn, and I cannot go back to that life,” she said.
“I’m not asking you to.”
“Let me finish, Jack,” Candy said. “I don’t have a heart, and I can’t cry but I see the way you look at me, and I am filled with feelings I have just begun to understand. It is hard to resist when every circuit in my body wants to feel your arms around me the way they are right now. I don’t want to be your personal companion...”
“I’m not asking you to be anything, Candy,” Jack interrupted. “I love you just the way you are. I don’t care if you can’t cook or clean, I just love the way I feel when I’m near you, and I find myself wanting to get much closer.”
“I’m not real big on the cleaning thing, but I can cook...,” Candy said with a smile she saved only for Jack.
Jack didn’t give her a chance to say another word as he covered her mouth with his. “We’ll hire a maid,” he said when he stopped a moment for air, and then he kissed her again. It was a good thing it was late, and nobody came in to enjoy the view of Earth the observation deck had to offer.
