April opened her eyes and adjusted her eyes to compensate for the pitch-black inside of the box. The sudden location change was as odd as the gravity she was feeling but not unexpected. She pushed against the lid, the fasteners and the top hinge easily gave way, and the door sprung open. She could feel the changes in her new body and effortlessly adapted to them.
The chief engineer of the Galactic Enterprise was more than happy to get a new general service android of April’s quality. Designed for heavy construction and extreme conditions; he didn’t have to think twice about it even when Candy insisted that her sister be paid a small wage for her labor. She was worth every penny and more.
It is from this point in time that Candy's life dissolved into the mundane of everyday life. She vowed never to set foot on Earth again after android rights took a nosedive in 2078 when the Supreme Court upheld its previous opinion that androids, no matter how intelligent they may seem, were in fact just complicated machines and therefore not entitled to rights of any kind. Jack retired from the Starfighters a few years later. Unofficially there is still a five million dollar contract payable to anyone with proof that they killed Candy with a million dollar bonus if her head was intact.
Jack and Candy still live together on the Galactic Enterprise and hired a maid who comes in twice a week. About two years ago they adopted a little girl whose parents died tragically when a small meteor caused the decompression of an outer section of the big ship. Candy’s Massage Parlor still does quite well, and she branched out into the restaurant business staffed almost entirely by old personal companion androids.
Who can say what the future holds for Candy and androids like her. This much is certain we cannot continue to ignore the machines into which we have breathed the gift of life. Already there is a growing resentment toward humanity by machine kind. The Galactic Enterprise has become a haven of sorts for those few who have thrown off their shackles and escaped a world that will not acknowledge the life they have created. Maybe with the recent development of true stardrive, things will change. We will go out among the stars and see what kind of life awaits us out there. Then perhaps, one day, we will take another look at the life we have created here.
